“Crows” Series – Miguel Ángel Aranda
Graphic work on antique paper
Dark, enigmatic, almost mythical. The raven has been a symbol steeped in mystery since ancient times. Across cultures, it has represented the unknown, intelligence, omens, and transformation. In this series, the artist Miguel Ángel Aranda delves into this ancestral symbolism and reinterprets it with a contemporary, sensitive, and profoundly poetic eye.
Each drawing in this series stems from meticulous work in graphite pencil on an original page from the French publication La Petite Illustration, published between 1900 and 1950. This paper, steeped in history, belonged to a magazine that published the texts of plays premiered in Paris, making each sheet a fragment of European cultural memory.
The result is a doubly narrative work: on the one hand, the image of the raven—almost always solitary, sometimes in flight, sometimes at rest—and on the other, the theatrical text that appears as a background, visible between lines or in shadows. This fusion transforms each piece into a silent conversation between image and word, between past and present.
