“Crows” Series – Miguel Ángel Aranda
Graphic work on old paper
Dark, enigmatic, almost mythical. The raven has been a symbol steeped in mystery since ancient times. Across cultures, it has represented the unknown, intelligence, omen, and transformation. In this series, artist Miguel Ángel Aranda delves into this ancient symbolism and reinterprets it with a contemporary, sensitive, and deeply poetic perspective.
Each drawing in this series is the result of meticulous graphite pencil work on an original page from the French publication La Petite Illustration, published between 1900 and 1950. This paper, steeped in history, once belonged to a magazine that published the texts of plays premiered in Paris, making each sheet a fragment of European cultural memory.
The result is a doubly narrative work: on the one hand, the image of the crow—almost always solitary, sometimes in flight, sometimes at rest—and on the other, the theatrical text that appears in the background, visible between lines or shadows. This fusion transforms each piece into a silent conversation between image and word, between past and present.
