MASKED
Contemporary Pop Art – Masked Woman with Rabbit
Acrylic and pencil on board | 42 x 20 x 1 cm | Original work by Miguel Ángel Aranda
“Masked Woman” is a contemporary figurative painting by Spanish artist Miguel Ángel Aranda, where Pop Surrealism, psychological portraiture, and a visual symbolism charged with power and ambiguity converge. Created in acrylic and pencil on panel, this 42 x 20 cm (1 cm deep) work is part of a series of portraits that explore female identity through disguise, theatricality, and the dreamlike.
The protagonist of this painting is a woman wearing a black latex mask, with a piercing gaze and red lips with her tongue protruding, adding a touch of tension, sensuality, and irony. The subtle detail of a rabbit—a symbolic motif laden with both playful and enigmatic connotations—adds a layer of surreal narrative to this powerful image.
Composition and technique: symbolic force in visual form
Aranda begins with flat patches of pastel acrylic paint, which she then refines with pencil to give shape to a female face, highlighting expressive features with almost sculptural precision. The contrast between the soft textures and the dominant black of the mask creates a vibrant and mysterious composition.
This work is situated between lowbrow art, contemporary surrealism and pop art aesthetics, making it a perfect piece for both art collectors and those looking for an original, symbolic and visually striking work.
